Watts Learning Center Elementary School Watts Learning Center Charter ElementarySchool-FullCut Show Transcript to begin with we started with 2 students 3 teachers uh principal and an office manager and uh we had no idea what to expect but we know we were committed to something better than what was the vision for our schools and our speak with these such that if in fact they had a quality education and the tools necessary to change their lives the quality of life would be vastly improved so we felt that if we change the system we can make a difference hi my name is Evan my name is Harley AG my name is and I'm in the fifth grade and I'm in the fifth grade and I'm in the fifth grade my favorite thing to learn at school is math and it's honestly really fun because I get to help my friends at my table and other people so it's really fun to do math I've been here since CK which means like I know most of the staff member it is like very fun here you have like fun activities to do and I get to like take out with my friends but what makes 1 cent in a place where young children Thrive is that we we're a strong Community we're a family we've been together for a very long time and we then place a priority on giving children the experiences that they need to grow to their full itself and so we really are a community that thrives on developing nurturing caring for and loving our children our students and staying together as a family they always the village to raise a family and truly when I dropped my daughter off it feels like a family so partnering with families is very important to us because we want them to know that we are giving their child not only the academic support that they need but the emotional support they need I think that's why we have survived and have been in the community for now almost 30 years I love it so much I haven't left in the last 25 years this place is a sense of community and people who have left here have mentioned that when they go to other schools they don't feel that family oriented Vibe it's their home away from home so a lot of the teachers a lot of the staff they make it feel very welcoming yeah 1 of the things I tell teachers is that we have the job of planting seed and we may not necessarily get to see the fruition 10 of that investment but we know and believe that if we're careful and cultivating the heart mind and spirit of our children that there will be a great flourishing if you just feel it there's just a lot of sense of community we feel safe when you get here you don't feel unwelcome when you arrive to the watch Learning Center there's a lot of warmth with the staff there's a lot of communication we have a lot of resources that we can provide for the children like they were provided for my children we have model we have things like every other organization but what we do is we make sure those are supported by actual structures everything we do from the time they get here to the time they leave we're providing as many opportunities we can for our students uh in the beginning of the year my my son was kind of all over the place and with the wonderful teacher he got he's the top reader right now in the class my daughter Zoe Brown she came from a regular La USD school and was behind in her reading she came here now she's on honorall my child has grown academically since attending walks Learning Center she has been on principles award that she recently just got an honorary so I know it's because of her teacher and what's Learning Center you want to know that when you leave your child at the gates that they're going to be safe and not only safe but cared for and I can assure you that happens here because every adult in the building understands the importance of making sure that kids are I've seen and taken care of and nurtured we truly care about your child we have a phrase wlc for Watts Learning Center stands for we love children and we truly do we're not looking at your child as just a a number or a score but we're looking at the whole child and watch The Learning Center we believe all children can Thrive we believe all children can Excel we believe that can rain community and Partnerships with families is the best way to move the students forward and we believe that we can be a pillar of this community and not only help the students of this community the families of this community but really support the community at large the was Learning Center comes with a great understanding of our community we love our community we love each and every 1 of our children who come and basically we have a bright future expectations for all the students who come to our school and we are doing something very different and very special
